Fact Friday: Flat Racks ~~ There are Rules.
Fact Friday:
While attending the Break Bulk Conference, one of the topics of discussion was the lack of understanding of the "RULES" of Flat Racks, at least here in Texas as they do differ from State to State. JETCO Transportation did a great job in explaining "Flat Rack" cargo in the October newsletter.
The Shaker Drum in this picture was overheight, slightly overwidth and weighed out at 96,000 pounds.

- Flat Racks are designed for oversize cargo that will not fit within the confines of a standard or open top container.
- Flat Racks are 20 foot and 40 foot lengths and weigh EMPTY 6,600 and 13,000 pounds respectifully.
- Flat Racks will ADD and average of 2 inches
- Legal weight for tractor, trailer, flat rack and cargo is 80,000 pounds. Anything over that you will need an overweight permit. HOWEVER in order to obtain the overweight permit it MUST BE ONE PIECE plus the flat rack.
- You must check with the liner to be sure that their specific weight restrictions are to be sure they will accept the cargo.
