Last week Dixie Cullen Interest's was amoung one of  one hundred companies to be honored as the Fastest Growning privately held businesses in a 10 country area.

We have received this honor twice in the past,  once in 2010 and then 2014.   We're excited to be honored and wish to take a moment to say  THANK YOU,  to our Dixie Cullen TEAM and to you our Customers and Vendors.

Dixie Cullen makes the Houston Fast 100 Private Businesses

Dixie Cullen Interests, a Houston-based industrial storage, export preparation and transloading company, is a three-time Fast 100 finalist ( including this year) and has spent three years on HBJ's List of Fastest Woman-Owned Businesses.

It all started in 1995 when a couple coincidences aligned for Catherine James, the founder and CEO.  "I had been in the machinery and plant relocation business, and I wanted off the road," James said. "There was a customer who got their permits pulled and needed to store equipment. A truck driver told me about a building, and it all came together."

 The company has grown rapidly since then, expanding to include quick-turnaround storage, unpacking containers coming in from the port and loading them into trucks, storing sensitive electronics in a special climate-controlled unit, and other services that clients requested.

"If it's big and ugly, we handle it. There’s a joke around here — the client will say, 'Can you reach into your magic bag of tricks and figure this out?'" James said. "But I have a very good team. They can make things happen. They're willing to put that extra work into it to make projects run more smoothly."

This can-do attitude has earned James clients like Exxon Mobil Corp., who used Dixie Cullen's services as the company carried out its massive move to its new campus. Another client is Phillips 66, as the company builds its Freeport and Sweeny petrochemical plants. Those two clients have fueled a lot of the company's growth, James said.

Dixie Cullen is currently building a second, 80,000-square-foot facility and expanding its climate-controlled unit by 20,000 square feet. Its in the final stages of earning a foreign trade zone certification that will allow for equipment from overseas to be stored at the company's facility.

"There aren’t a lot of warehouses in Houston that have foreign trade zone status that can also handle heavy machinery and equipment," James said, adding that the Port of Houston has been advocating on the company's behalf to get the designation. "That’s why the port was so eager to help; they are seeing us as a resource for them. I can see it adding another 30 percent increase in growth next year in the project cargo department."

Beyond The List: Texas, Houston among best places for women-owned businesses

September 26th  the Houston Business Journal will release its rankings for the Fastest-Growing Women-Owned Businesses List and a new List of the Largest Women-Owned Businesses, ranked by locally generated revenue. The businesses on The Lists represent a tiny fraction of the women-owned businesses (WOBs) in Houston.

According to The State of Women-Owned Businesses, 2014, a report published by American Express OPEN, there are more than 178,500 women-owned businesses in the Houston metro area, representing 24 percent of all women-owned businesses in Texas. Between 2002 and 2014, the number of women-owned businesses in Texas increased 52 percent, the fifth-fastest in the nation.

Texas ranked as the ninth best state for women-owned businesses, tied with Utah. The rankings were based on the number of women-owned businesses in the state, the revenue growth between 2002 and 2014 and growth in number of employees in the same period.

Among the metro areas with the greatest increase in number of WOBs, Houston was beat out by fellow Texas markets San Antonio, which ranked first, and Dallas, which came in second. The number of WOBs increased 86 percent in San Antonio and 63 in Dallas. However, Houston dominated when it came to overall revenue increase: WOBs in Houston increased revenues by 112 percent between 2002 and 2014.

It's no surprise Houston's WOB are growing. Companies on this year's List of Fastest-Growing Women-Owned Businesses increased revenues 56 percent on average between 2012 and 2013 and generated combined revenues of $1.34 billion. Companies that ranked on The List must be at least 51 percent women-owned and have generated at least $1 million in revenue in 2013.

In the overall rankings of the metro areas, San Antonio enjoys the top spot, followed by a four-way tie that includes Atlanta, Baltimore, Houston, and Portland. The sixth through tenth places are filled by: Washington, D.C.; Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg, Florida; Seattle; Dallas; and Riverside, California.

The companies on the Largest Women-Owned Businesses generated a combined $1.79 billion in revenues for 2013 and employ 3,700 people in the Houston area.

What an exciting week we had last week,  the Houston Business Journals FAST 100 Awards, for privately owned businesses in the 10 county area,   were held on Thursday,  and we are pleased to announce that we were one of the Honorees    We would like to thank our WONDERFUL customers and our COMMITTED TEAM of employees for helping us to achieve this honor. 

The Houston Business Journal also recognized  Top 10 Enterprise Champions Awards.  Of the 100 FAST 100 Honorees,  80 were eligible for this award.  It was announced that Dixie Cullen was one of the Top 10!

The Houston Business Journal has revealed the finalists for the 2014 Fast 100 awards, which honor Houston's fastest-growing private companies. But the rankings are still a secret.

The finalists come from very every corner of the Houston economy — companies representing tech, real estate, manufacturing and engineering dominate the list, with a few marketing firms and retailers sprinkled in.

The companies will be ranked by two-year revenue growth, from 2011 to 2013. All of the companies on the list are headquartered within the 10-county Houston metropolitan area and have been doing business for a minimum of five years.
