Dear Clients and Friends: The Houston District Export Council (DEC) will be hosting a BIS two-day seminar entitled “Complying with U.S. Export Controls” on Tuesday, January 29th, through Wednesday, January 30th, in Houston, TX, at the Hotel Derek. This two-day program, co-sponsored with the Houston District Export Council, is led by BIS's professional counseling staff and provides an in-depth examination of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The program will cover the information exporters need to know to comply with U.S. export control requirements on commercial goods. This program is well suited for those who need a comprehensive understanding of their obligations under the EAR. Technical, policy, and enforcement professionals from BIS, as well as specialists from other U.S. Government agencies such as the Office of Foreign Assets Control and the Bureau of Census will participate in certain programs.   Time:  7:30 am breakfast/registration until 4:30 pm. Fact Friday: Houston's East End

Since we've just moved into the area commonly called the "East End"  I though it might be nice to share a fact or two in our Fact Friday Postings.

East End Industry

Houston’s East End, the original birthplace of business is a hybrid of retail and manufacturing businesses ready to be of service.  The economic engine driving the East End economy is the Port of Houston. The economic effect of the Port of Houston results in a spin-off of related service companies from logistics/warehousing companies to marine related industries supporting the Port.  Food manufacturing giants call the East End home with several companies employing over 3,000 employees with an economic impact of 12,000+ additional indirect jobs in the area. 

Hurricane Sandy

While Hurricane Sandy is not directly affecting the Houston Port,  it does affect many of our customers so we wanted to be sure to share the below information with you.



There are  U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) updates reporting that ports between Virginia and New York have suspended operations. Members of the trade community are encouraged to monitor CBP.gov for updates on port operations and on CBP’s efforts to minimize disruptions.

Fact Friday: Flat Racks ~~ There are Rules.

While attending the Break Bulk Conference,  one of the topics of discussion was the lack of understanding of the "RULES" of Flat Racks,  at least here in Texas as they do differ from State to State.  JETCO Transportation did a great job in explaining  "Flat Rack" cargo in the October newsletter.

• Flat Racks are designed for oversize cargo that will not fit within the confines of a standard or open top container.
• Flat Racks  are 20 foot  and 40 foot lengths  and weigh  EMPTY  6,600  and 13,000 pounds respectifully.
• Flat Racks will ADD and average of 2 inches 
• Legal weight for tractor, trailer,  flat rack and cargo is 80,000 pounds.  Anything over that you will need an overweight permit.   HOWEVER  in order to obtain the overweight permit  it MUST BE ONE PIECE plus the flat rack.
• You must check with the liner to be sure that their specific weight restrictions are to be sure they will accept the cargo.

The important thing to remember is that if you're permitting for width, weight or even length the load CAN NOT be divisible.

·         To be closer to the port facilities

•  Wanted easier truck access
• Rail Siding
• Enough overhead height to allow for installation of overhead cranes,  we now have 32 to 40 foot truss heights
• To keep our operations under one roof, avoiding wasted space
• Wanted to be able to increase the amount of space available for Humidity Controlled Storage
• Wanted enough space to be able to add “Bonded Storage” to our services

Do keep us in mind for any future temporary or long term storage, transloading and export preparation needs that you may have in the future.
